Syntax Evolution: Problems and Recursion
نویسنده
چکیده
We are Turing complete, and natural language parsing is decidable, so our syntactic abilities are in excess to those needed to speak a natural language. This is an anomaly, because evolution would not select and keep an overqualified feature. We solve this anomaly by using a coincidence, both syntax and problem solving are computing, and a difference, Turing completeness is not a requirement of syntax, but of problem solving. Then computing should have been shaped by evolutionary requirements coming from both syntax and problem solving, but the last one, Turing completeness, only from problem solving. So we propose and analyze a hypothesis: syntax and problem solving co-evolved in humans towards Turing completeness. Finally, we argue that Turing completeness, also known as recursion, is our most singular feature.

Learning, Bottlenecks and the Evolution of Recursive Syntax
Human language is a unique natural communication system for two reasons.1 Firstly, the mapping from meanings to signals in language has structural properties that are not found in any other animal’s communication systems. In particular, syntax gives us the ability to produce an infinite range of expressions through the dual tools of compositionality and recursion. Compositionality is defined he...
متن کاملDeficiency of the Space Syntax method as an urban design tool in designing traditional urban space and the need for some supplementary methods
Urban design problems have become so complex that no single designer is able to consider all aspects of a design area simultaneously. Lately the application of computerized and scientific methods have helped designers analyze complex problems. One of these new methods is Space Syntax. The purpose of this study is to first investigate the strengths and weaknesses of this method and then suggest ...
متن کاملInformation Structure and Minimal Recursion Semantics
Comparing English and Finnish, and simplifying a complex issue very much, we can say that English has fixed word order and Finnish has free word order. Syntactic theories such as HPSG (Sag and Wasow, 1999) have provided relatively successful descriptions of English, using a phrase structure approach to capture generalizations about fixed word order. Software tools such as LKB (Copestake, 2000) ...
متن کاملAlpha - Structural Recursion and Induction ( Extended
There is growing evidence for the usefulness of name permutations when dealing with syntax involving names and name-binding. In particular they facilitate an attractively simple formalisation of common, but often technically incorrect uses of structural recursion and induction for abstract syntax trees modulo α-equivalence. At the heart of this formalisation is the notion of finitely supported ...
متن کاملSpecifying Database Transformations in WOL
WOL is a Horn-clause language for specifying transformations involving complex types and recursive data-structures. Its declarative syntax makes programs easy to modify in response to schema evolution; the ability to specify partial clauses facilitates transformations when schemas are very large and data is drawn from multiple sources; and the inclusion of constraints enables a number of optimi...
